Introducing #SpokenSunday

With the rising popularity of AudioBoo, an audio publishing service kind of like podcasting and the continuing rise of #FridayFlash, the twitter meme that sees a heap of writers post flash fiction each Friday on their blogs, the idea came to me, with my love of open mic poetry and readings, that we ought to bring the open mic to the internet in the form of another Twitter meme, #SpokenSunday.

The idea is that each Sunday, people post a reading of a creative piece on AudioBoo (or some other audio recording service) and then post a link to it on Twitter using the hashtag #SpokenSunday. And then by sending it to me, I can compile a list of links to all the #SpokenSunday recordings to feature on this blog each week.

You can post a reading of a flash fiction piece, a short story, a poem or a spoken word piece. The best thing to do though would be to record you reading your weekly #FridayFlash piece. The only real limit is that it be under 5 minutes long according to AudioBoo specifications.

Writers can get a lot out of reading their work aloud for an audience. It allows you to see areas for improvement you haven’t noticed, and it can improve the way you write and your sentence structure as you begin to think how things will sound.

There is also the possibility of reaching new audiences if people prefer listening than reading fiction online on a screen.

So get recording before this Sunday and post your link on Twitter on that day. In the next few days, I’ll work out a way to collect all the pieces and update this blog to let people know how to submit.

Also, spread the news of this via Twitter and your own blogs so we have lots of interest for our first week.
